Historic Cave Dating Back Over Five Centuries Discovered in Khash District, Badakhshan

The Information and Culture Department of Badakhshan province has announced the discovery of a cave estimated to be over five centuries old in the Kajgerdan area of Khash district. The discovery occurred when local residents, while digging an earthen mound for construction purposes, came across the entrance of this cave.
According to officials from the department, preliminary investigations indicate that the cave dates back to the pre-Islamic era and is likely related to the Zoroastrian period.
This is not the first time significant archaeological remains have been found in Badakhshan province; with its ancient historical background and unique geographical location, the province is considered one of the key archaeological sites in northeastern Afghanistan.
Although archaeologists and local cultural experts have called for the investigation and preservation of such undiscovered heritage sites, the Taliban administration’s neglect in protecting historical artifacts and facilitating scientific research has raised new concerns. In the absence of a legal authority committed to safeguarding the country’s cultural and historical assets, the fate of this cave and similar sites remains uncertain.
