FAO Efforts to Improve Rice Quality in Afghanistan

In Kunar province, a field day event brought together farmers and agricultural experts to explore modern rice cultivation methods and share experiences on producing high-quality seeds and boosting yields.
Participants focused on the use of experimental plots, known as “breeder plots,” to test new rice varieties and discussed strategies for improving production and farm management.
The program was led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) with financial support from the World Bank. It is part of FAO’s broader mission to strengthen food security and empower Afghan farmers.
These initiatives come at a time when Afghanistan’s agricultural infrastructure and production systems face severe challenges following the collapse of state institutions under Taliban rule. For many farmers, international support offers a rare source of hope for sustaining livelihoods and improving the country’s food outlook.
