In a report released on Friday, March 3, the organization stated that between January 2025 and January 2026 alone, at least 338 children lost their lives or suffered disabilities as a result of mines and other remnants of explosive war materials.

According to the report, children constituted nearly 70 percent of the total victims of explosive devices during this period. Save the Children also warned that Afghanistan has the highest global rate of child casualties caused by explosive materials, accounting for 43 percent of the total children killed or injured worldwide since 1999.

The report highlights that more than 2.7 million people in Afghanistan live within one kilometer of explosive remnants of war, with nearly 5,000 contaminated areas still uncleared. A large portion of these explosives are located in pastures—areas that serve as living and transit zones for nomadic groups, especially the Kuchis.

Save the Children added that many Kuchis travel hundreds of kilometers each year with their livestock and camels to access water and grazing areas, while having limited access to essential services such as health, education, and protection. This situation increases the risk of children encountering mines and unexploded ordnance.

Bujar Hoxha, head of the organization in Afghanistan, stated that war remnants are still scattered across the country, putting children at direct risk while playing or performing daily tasks. He emphasized that expanding awareness programs and accelerating the clearance of contaminated areas are urgent needs.

Despite years having passed since the end of widespread conflicts, mine clearance efforts still face significant challenges. Aid organizations have called for more serious attention from the Taliban administration and sustained international support to reduce this deadly threat to Afghan children.

Save the Children reports nearly one child a day killed or disabled by explosive devices in Afghanistan, urging urgent clearance and awareness efforts.

[17,8

post-9917","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-important-news","category-social-affairs
["GET
