The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has reported that Afghanistan remains the third country with the highest number of casualties caused by mines and unexploded ordnance, with more than 50 people killed or injured each month as a result of these explosions.<\/p>\n
Nick Pound, head of UNAMA’s mine clearance section, stated at a press conference that this statistic means nearly one person in Afghanistan becomes a victim of mines or leftover war munitions every day. He added that about 80 percent of the victims are children, especially boys.<\/p>\n
He further explained that 90 percent of these casualties are due to unexploded ordnance left over from four decades of conflict in various parts of the country. Many children encounter these objects while playing or herding livestock, leading to accidents.<\/p>\n
According to UNAMA information, approximately one thousand square kilometers of Afghan land remain contaminated with mines and unexploded ordnance. Nearly three million residents, 800 educational centers, and 200 health centers are located within one kilometer of these contaminated areas, living or operating there.<\/p>\n
The head of UNAMA’s mine clearance section pointed to a significant decline in international aid, noting that financial support for mine clearance programs has decreased in recent years. He said that while the number of mine clearance personnel was about 15,000 in 2011, it has now dropped to around 1,300.<\/p>\n
This situation comes amid the return of refugees, natural disasters such as earthquakes, and border tensions with Pakistan, which are also cited as serious challenges for the people of Afghanistan. The reduction of global aid and the lack of a responsive framework from the Taliban administration to effectively manage this crisis have raised concerns about the future of mine clearance efforts.<\/p>\n
UNAMA emphasized that Afghanistan possesses extensive national and international experience in mine clearance, and if global support increases, it will be possible to fully clear these areas and enable people to return to normal life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
