The Taliban Supreme Court has announced that six individuals, including two women, in Jawzjan province were flogged after trial and sentenced to imprisonment. The released statement did not specify the exact remarks the convicted individuals were accused of making or how their cases were processed. Since regaining control over Afghanistan, the Taliban administration has deemed criticism or what it terms \u2018insulting officials\u2019 as punishable offenses, arresting and penalizing citizens on such charges in various instances. This contrasts with the previous Afghan regime, where criticism of government officials was not considered a crime.<\/p>\n
According to the Supreme Court\u2019s announcement, several other individuals were also flogged and imprisoned on charges of extramarital sexual relations and fasting violations. In some cases, Taliban courts in Balkh and Jawzjan provinces have sentenced men and women accused of extramarital affairs to five and six years in prison, respectively.<\/p>\n
The human rights organization Rwadari reported last week that the Taliban administration imposed punishments last year described by the group as \u2018cruel, inhuman, and degrading.\u2019 The report indicated that during this period, six people were sentenced to retribution, one woman to stoning, and 857 individuals to flogging.<\/p>\n
Despite international organizations\u2019 opposition to corporal punishment and emphasis on prohibiting torture, the Taliban continue to carry out public floggings, justifying the practice as enforcement of Islamic law (Sharia).
