The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to hold a special session on Afghanistan on Monday, March 9, during which the country\u2019s political, economic, and human rights conditions will be discussed. Several regional countries are also expected to attend.<\/p>\n
According to a United Nations announcement, Georgette Gagnon, head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), will present information at the meeting based on the latest report by UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres. This report covers UNAMA\u2019s activities as well as the current situation in Afghanistan\u2019s political, economic, and human rights sectors.<\/p>\n
At the same time, discussions among Security Council members have begun regarding a draft resolution proposed by China to extend UNAMA\u2019s mandate. In recent years, UNAMA\u2019s mission has been one of the few official international frameworks monitoring developments in Afghanistan and documenting the human rights situation in the country.<\/p>\n
The Security Council also stated that prior to the meeting, Panama\u2019s representative, on behalf of several countries including France, Denmark, and Colombia, will condemn the restrictions imposed on women and girls in Afghanistan. These countries are members of the group supporting the \u201cWomen, Peace, and Security\u201d initiative.<\/p>\n
Over the past more than four years, the Taliban administration has enforced extensive restrictions on the education, employment, and social participation of women and girls\u2014actions that have faced continuous criticism from the international community and human rights organizations.
