Pakistan’s representative at the Third Committee meeting of the UN General Assembly described the human rights situation in Afghanistan as critical, emphasizing that the Taliban are continually retreating from their international obligations. He stated that the Taliban’s widespread restrictions on the fundamental freedoms of women and girls contradict Islamic principles.

Referring to the ninth Conference of Women’s Affairs Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation held in Islamabad, he said the organization had expressed deep concern over the ongoing Taliban restrictions on women in Afghanistan. According to him, Taliban actions have deprived Afghan women of their human rights and the dignity they deserve.

The Pakistani representative also highlighted Pakistan’s long history of hosting millions of Afghan refugees, adding that despite shortcomings from the international community, Pakistan continues to support and provide facilities for vulnerable Afghans.

In another part of his remarks, he addressed the issue of terrorism, accusing the Taliban of close cooperation with terrorist groups such as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, Al-Qaeda, and ISIS. He stressed that these groups operate in Afghanistan with backing from foreign actors, using the country as a base to target Pakistan and neighboring states.

He also referred to Pakistan’s airstrikes on Kabul and Nangarhar in March last year, stating that these attacks targeted military installations and infrastructure allegedly used to support Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan attacks, according to Islamabad. The Pakistani representative warned that Pakistan would not remain silent in the face of terrorist threats and would take action under international law against any entity threatening its national security and citizens if necessary.
