Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry has strongly denied that civilians were killed in its military strikes inside Afghanistan. Ministry spokesman Sajjad Haider Khan said in a statement that the country’s attacks had only targeted militant objectives and described any reports of civilian casualties as the result of “misinformation and misleading narratives.”

He added that Pakistan carried out the operations in response to a wave of militant attacks that have killed more than 3,500 people in 2026, and justified them under the “right of self-defence.” According to him, the Taliban is responsible for preventing Afghan territory from being used to plan and carry out attacks against Pakistan, and the group continues to provide sanctuary to organisations such as Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan and the Baloch Liberation Army.

The remarks came as the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said in its report last month that 512 civilians were killed and more than 1,360 others wounded in Pakistani attacks in Afghanistan. The contradiction between UNAMA’s report and Pakistan’s official statements highlights a serious crisis over the protection of civilian rights in the conflict.

The Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesman also called on the international community to hold the Taliban accountable for failing to meet their commitments to prevent Afghan territory from being used as a base for militant attacks. He stressed that Pakistan has the right to take whatever action is necessary to safeguard its sovereignty and the security of its citizens.

The statements were published as cross-border military attacks and militant activity in the Afghanistan-Pakistan border regions have severely threatened regional security. Beyond the human toll, the fighting has also deepened broader political tensions between the two neighbouring countries.
