The former US administration led by Donald Trump is said to have proposed Orban as the main choice for the post. Orban, a close Trump ally in Europe, is also said to have a chance of winning support from Russia and China.

The sources also claimed that the candidate could secure 10 of the 15 votes on the UN Security Council. Viktor Orban was recently defeated in Hungary’s election and removed from power.

The term of current UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who has held the post for several years, ends on December 31 this year. In addition to Viktor Orban, figures such as Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rebecca Grynspan, secretary-general of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, and other candidates from various countries are also being discussed for the role.

The selection of the UN secretary-general is politically significant and could influence the direction of the international body.
