In addition to producing clothing, the centre provides sewing and embroidery training to young women and girls, including 15 returning women and girls among its trainees.

The UN says this support has given trainees the chance to earn an income by helping fulfil customer orders, thereby contributing to improvements in household finances. However, such assistance remains limited and cannot replace the removal of the widespread barriers women face in the economic sphere.

The Taliban administration has so far taken no serious steps to lift restrictions and create fair conditions for women’s economic activity, an issue widely criticised by civil society and women’s rights activists. Although UN spokespeople say the agencies are trying to continue strengthening women’s capacities with limited resources, the structural problems of the Taliban administration remain an obstacle to broader progress for women.

UNDP says support for women entrepreneurs in Kunduz and Baghlan has expanded businesses and created jobs despite Taliban restrictions.

[17,8,3

post-24482","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-important-news","category-social-affairs","category-top-news
["GET
