The French government has extended nighttime curfew regulations in parts of Paris, Lyon and Marseille to prevent the spread of violent protests over injustice and corruption. The move comes after days of clashes and unrest.

Paris police said the nighttime ban in areas around Place de la République and the Les Halles commercial district has helped reduce tensions, and that the restrictions will remain in place as long as needed. In Lyon, the curfew has also been extended from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. in the city centre, while in Marseille movement restrictions for unaccompanied minors have been imposed.

France’s acting prime minister said security forces would be deployed on a large scale for the protests expected on Saturday, in order to exercise tighter control over gatherings. The acting interior minister also said military personnel taking part in the anti-terror operation Sentinel had shifted their focus to protecting sensitive sites, allowing police and gendarmes to devote more of their forces to dealing with the unrest.

France’s acting justice minister said a suspect in the fire at the historic city hall building in Limoges had been arrested, but that the person may not have acted alone. Reports said the suspect had links to radical environmental groups and was listed as a threat to national security.

Since the protests began, around 2,400 people have been arrested in cities across France, with clashes reported between demonstrators and security forces, along with the burning of cars and attacks on public buildings and shops. By Tuesday midday, 149 people had been sent to prison and more than 800 had been referred to judicial authorities.

France’s National Assembly has also launched a formal investigation into the violence of October 17 and the conduct of the security forces, with results expected to be released by the end of this year. Protests continued on a smaller scale on Tuesday, as hundreds of school pupils, students and demonstrators gathered in the cities of Rennes and Lyon.
