As hundreds of thousands of people continue to protest against Emmanuel Macron\u2019s government in France, news that a large police deployment has been assigned to protect a chocolate workshop owned by the family of Brigitte Macron, the president\u2019s wife, has drawn sharp criticism.<\/p>\n
French newspaper Le Figaro reported that since Oct. 17, following widespread unrest and riots that left parts of several cities engulfed in looting and violence, several patrol vehicles and a significant police presence have been stationed to protect the workshop in the city of Amiens.<\/p>\n
The move has angered public opinion, and the French National Police union, criticising President Macron\u2019s handling of the situation, said that while shops and public places are being looted and police are short-staffed, a large number of officers have been assigned to protect a workshop belonging to the president\u2019s wife\u2019s family rather than the public. The union asked Macron whether all French people should have equal access to security.<\/p>\n
Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, a 2027 presidential candidate and leader of the French national party, also condemned the decision, saying other business owners have been left hostage to looters because of the government\u2019s weakness in controlling the situation.<\/p>\n
Radio RMC had previously reported that some small and medium-sized businesses in France, because of the government\u2019s failure to maintain order, have equipped themselves with defensive gear to protect their property from vandals.<\/p>\n
In the wake of the recent unrest, French authorities have extended overnight curfews in parts of Paris, Lyon and Marseille. Paris police said the restrictions around Place de la R\u00e9publique and the city\u2019s commercial areas have helped reduce violence and will remain in place for as long as necessary.<\/p>\n
French Prime Minister S\u00e9bastien Lecornu also said security forces would be deployed on a large scale at future protests, and the country\u2019s interior minister said military forces under Operation Sentinel would be responsible for protecting sensitive sites so police can focus more on controlling demonstrations.<\/p>\n
