Nasir Ahmad Faiq, acting head of Afghanistan’s mission to the United Nations, has warned in response to comments by Qatar’s minister of state on economic cooperation with Afghanistan that such engagement must not become a pretext for legitimising the Taliban administration and consolidating its power.

In a message on the social media platform X, Faiq said that “the economic revival of Afghanistan must not be separated from the fundamental rights of the people, especially women and girls who continue to face systematic discrimination and deprivation under Taliban rule.”

He added that humanitarian aid must continue, but that lasting economic recovery and long-term stability are only possible through a credible, inclusive and Afghan-led political process — one that leads to the formation of a legitimate, accountable government based on the will of the people, justice and respect for international commitments.

The acting head of Afghanistan’s mission to the United Nations said women and the people of Afghanistan deserve more than economic promises and should have freedom, human dignity, justice and a meaningful voice in determining their own future.

In contrast, Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser Al Misnad, Qatar’s minister of state for international cooperation, called at the Afghanistan Coordination Group meeting in Doha for a transition from humanitarian aid to support for Afghanistan’s economic development and private sector.

She also emphasised the need to strengthen international cooperation and coordinate efforts to establish long-term stability and create the conditions for sustainable economic recovery in Afghanistan.

Since the Taliban returned to power, Qatar has established close political ties with the group and has repeatedly called in international meetings for continued aid and economic cooperation with the Taliban. Qatari officials have also played a mediating role in talks between the Taliban, the United States and European countries on prisoner exchanges and the return of Afghan migrants.
