Taliban Information and Culture Minister Shah Ahmad Haqqani stressed the primacy of religion over economic and livelihood issues in Afghanistan at a ceremony marking the introduction of the book “Aqeedah Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamaah,” held on Monday evening, October 20, in the compound of Afghanistan National Radio and Television in Kabul.

He described the Taliban administration as an “Islamic caliphate” and said the group’s main goal is to promote the religious teachings of the Taliban leader, not to meet the people’s economic needs. Haqqani added that economic matters and the daily lives of citizens have a lower priority than reforming religious beliefs and faith.

The remarks came as millions of Afghans face severe economic hardship, poverty and unemployment, and many are forced to leave the country to earn a living. Estimates by international organisations show that around 22 million people in Afghanistan need urgent food assistance.

The Taliban administration’s deputy chief justice, Mohammad Qasem Rasikh, also said at the event that the opportunity to establish an Islamic system is unprecedented and stressed that no one acts contrary to Sharia. Taliban officials also emphasised the need to obey the leader and promote the teachings of Hibatullah Akhundzada’s book.

Meanwhile, Taliban officials claimed that the group also pays attention to rebuilding the country and improving the economy, but the information and culture minister acknowledged that they are unable to solve all the people’s problems and left those issues to God.

The book in question has been published in Pashto and is due to be translated into Persian, Uzbek and Turkmen so its teachings can be spread more widely in society.

The event was held at a time when many citizens, due to the lack of job opportunities and livelihood problems, have been forced to migrate, and the country’s economy is facing many challenges.
