US President Donald Trump has used recent unrest in France, which has led to widespread protests over rising living costs, to justify tightening immigration policy in the United States.

At a rally in Kansas, he claimed France was being taken over and destroyed by “immigrants, jihadists and communists” and warned that his administration would not allow similar developments to happen in the US.

Trump had previously warned that France was making a mistake by admitting large numbers of immigrants, and claimed that Paris would soon become a “Muslim-majority city.” He also urged France on Truth Social to close its borders to immigrants, saying they had taken control of the country.

The protests over rising living costs in France began over the past weekend and were accompanied by some clashes and looting of stores. In response to the unrest, the French government has imposed curfews in some areas.

Political experts say Trump’s attempt to exploit France’s crisis in US political campaigning, particularly ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, is aimed at winning more support for the Republican Party. J. C. Lintzenich, a researcher at the German Marshall Fund, described the move as using the French crisis instrumentally for electoral purposes.

Despite Trump’s insistence on tough immigration policies, research by the Pew Research Center shows that economic issues remain the top concern for American voters and have the greatest influence on their voting decisions. Opposition and economic challenges to Trump, including the inflation crisis and the impact of tariff policies, also remain in place, and his popularity has fallen to its lowest level.

Justin Vaïsse, a professor of US foreign policy, says linking France’s crisis to cultural and immigration debates in the US is unlikely to attract new voters, but may encourage Trump’s current supporters to turn out in greater numbers in the election.
