Abdulmalik Al-Ajri, a member of Yemen\u2019s negotiating team, has described Egypt\u2019s Al-Azhar institution\u2019s new proposal to form a mediation committee with the participation of the wise and learned of the Islamic world as a practical step that should be supported. Citing Mehr news agency and Al-Manar, Al-Ajri said the proposal went beyond a routine statement and described it as the voice of the conscience of the Islamic world at a time when the views of reasonable voices in society carry less weight.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Ahmed El-Tayeb, the head of Egypt\u2019s Al-Azhar, called on Arab and Islamic countries yesterday to take the path of dialogue and prudence, bearing in mind the spirit of brotherhood and religious and blood ties. He stressed that all warlike actions threatening the lives of civilians must be stopped immediately.<\/p>\n
El-Tayeb also proposed the immediate formation of a mediation committee to end disputes and strengthen the sovereignty of Arab states, and said he was fully prepared to support such a committee. According to him, all sides can put aside their differences through wisdom and help bring an end to the conflicts in the region.<\/p>\n
Al-Azhar\u2019s proposal comes as the region continues to face unrest and internal wars, while previous mediation efforts have so far failed to resolve the underlying problems.
