The discontent has been driven mainly by the deterioration in education, higher fuel prices and a deepening housing crisis, which is putting heavy pressure on low-income families.

The protests have shown that political tensions are closely and complexly intertwined with economic and social problems, and there is still no sign that the unrest is easing. If government promises to tackle these problems are not delivered in a tangible way, the protests could spread again.

In France, despite promises by Paris leaders to address teacher shortages and support vulnerable groups following higher fuel prices, violent clashes between protesters and police have intensified, and around 1,800 people have been arrested so far.

Protests in Spain and Portugal have also continued, centered on the housing crisis and repeated rent increases. In Spain, a bill to protect tenants failed to pass, further fuelling public anger. The protest movement has also spread to other European countries, including Italy, Belgium and Albania.

Protests spread across Europe over economic hardship, housing costs, rising rents and unrest over education and fuel prices.

[17,6

post-24240","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-important-news","category-international
["GET
