Widespread protests in France held over the rising cost of living have left more than 1,800 demonstrators detained and more than 500 police and firefighters injured.

According to Anadolu, citing Mehr News Agency, France’s Interior Ministry said the protests drew large numbers of Yellow Vest groups, trade unions, students and farmers.

Official figures show more than 550,000 people took part in nationwide demonstrations across France, including 110,000 in Paris. Organisers said the number of participants was around 800,000. While the main march in Paris ended largely without incident, violent clashes, fires and looting were reported in several cities, including Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux and Limoges.

During the unrest, one protester died on Boulevard Magenta in Paris, with police saying the cause was cardio-respiratory arrest. Media reports also said a 17-year-old teenager in the city of Saint-Etienne lost a hand after being struck by a police grenade.

Paris police said 855 people were arrested, while prosecutors put the number at 720, about 500 of whom remain in custody. One of the most significant losses was a fire at a historic town hall building in Limoges. In addition, hundreds of stores, including more than 50 Carrefour retail outlets, were damaged.

In response to the unrest, French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu will hold an emergency interministerial meeting to examine the economic, insurance and legal consequences of the incidents, and will meet the mayors of Paris, Marseille and Lyon to discuss the management of security forces. The president of the French National Assembly is also seeking to form a parliamentary inquiry commission to investigate the protests.

Meanwhile, the French prime minister has blamed the far-left for the violence, while some critics have strongly condemned police conduct and some political figures have called for the interior minister to resign.

The unrest comes as protesters have voiced concern over what they see as an unfair rise in living costs and the country’s weak economic conditions.
