Saudi Arabia’s Interior Ministry said at least 13,822 migrants were detained during joint patrols and inspections by representatives of various government agencies for violating labour, residency and border security regulations. The detentions took place between October 8 and October 14.<\/p>\n
According to the ministry, of those detained, 6,547 were held for violating residency laws, 3,896 for breaching border security regulations and 3,379 for violating labour laws. In addition, 2,021 people were detained while trying to enter the kingdom illegally and 28 were detained while attempting to leave Saudi Arabia illegally.<\/p>\n
During the same period, 9,454 undocumented residents were deported from the country, and the cases of another 20,190 were referred to the diplomatic missions of their countries of origin to obtain travel documents. Another 6,509 people were referred to the relevant authorities to complete deportation procedures.<\/p>\n
Saudi Arabia’s Interior Ministry also said it had detained 24 of its own citizens who were involved in helping and transporting violating migrants. The ministry said legal action was ongoing against more than 34,000 foreign nationals, including more than 32,000 men and 2,000 women.<\/p>\n
The ministry had previously announced on September 29 that more than 12,000 undocumented migrants had been deported. It has also warned citizens who illegally facilitate the entry of migrants into the country that they face penalties including up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to 1 million Saudi riyals.
