Uzbekistan strengthened its position in Afghanistan’s flour market in 2025, increasing competition with traditional suppliers including Kazakhstan and Russia. This was stated by Yevgeny Gan, head of the founding board of the Kazakhstan Grain Processors Association.<\/p>\n
According to Gan, Uzbekistan exported nearly 1.6 million tonnes of flour worth $441.7 million last year, 99.9% of which was sent to Afghanistan. The figures show that Afghanistan was the main destination for Uzbek flour exports.<\/p>\n
Over the same period, Kazakhstan’s flour exports to Afghanistan fell by about 200,000 tonnes. Gan said Uzbek producers had been able to offer flour at more competitive prices in the Afghan market by taking advantage of lower transport costs and the absence of transit tariffs on related routes.<\/p>\n
However, the shift in regional trade patterns has created a different situation for Central Asia’s grain industry. Uzbekistan buys a significant share of the wheat it needs from Kazakhstan, processes it in domestic mills and then exports it to Afghanistan.<\/p>\n
In this way, Kazakhstan continues to supply its neighbour with the raw materials it needs, but the country’s flour processors are facing growing competition from Uzbek producers in one of their key export markets. Russian flour exporters are also under greater competitive pressure to maintain their position in the Afghan market and are looking for alternative markets, including China.<\/p>\n
This trend shows that transport costs, domestic processing capacity and access to effective trade routes have a direct impact on the position of Central Asian countries in regional markets. For Afghanistan, the figures also highlight the market’s heavy dependence on regional suppliers and Uzbekistan’s growing role in meeting that demand.<\/p>\n
