The Vatican has announced that Pope Leo XIV, the 71-year-old leader of the world’s Catholics, has been diagnosed with adenocarcinoma after surgery to remove a mass from his right lung. The condition is considered one of the common forms of lung cancer.<\/p>\n
Pope Leo was admitted to Gemelli Hospital in Rome for the procedure. According to the medical team, the lower part of his right lung was operated on to remove all cancerous tissue.<\/p>\n
The Vatican also said all of the pope’s public engagements until October 21 have been cancelled because of his recovery period. However, no decision has yet been made on whether to go ahead with or cancel his 11-day trip to South America, which had been scheduled for November.<\/p>\n
