Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting says the Taliban administration is shirking its responsibilities by resorting to rhetoric and diverting public attention instead of addressing terrorist threats emanating from Afghan territory.

In a statement posted late Monday on the social media platform X, the ministry said recent remarks by Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid were a response to Pakistan’s internal problems, adding that focusing on the country’s domestic affairs could not hide the Taliban administration’s failure to prevent attacks against Pakistan.

The ministry also referred to restrictions on girls’ education and what it described as violations of fundamental human rights in Afghanistan, saying the Taliban administration, given its record, could not lecture others on governance and citizens’ rights.

Pakistan stressed that preventing terrorist groups from using Afghan territory to plan and carry out attacks is the responsibility of the Taliban administration. It urged the Taliban to take practical steps, rather than denial, to address what it called a documented threat.

The Pakistani information ministry’s statement also referred to a report by the UN Security Council’s Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team. According to the report, the number of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan fighters in Afghanistan is estimated at about 6,000, and Pakistan has claimed these individuals are supported by the Taliban administration.

Zabihullah Mujahid yesterday dismissed the allegations as baseless and said Pakistan should not hold the Taliban administration responsible for its internal problems. He called on Pakistan to respect the views and rights of the country’s politicians and people.
