Taliban officials in Afghanistan’s western provinces gathered in Herat as reports in recent weeks pointed to an increase in attacks by groups opposed to the administration in Herat and Ghor.

Afghanistan’s Taliban-run Interior Ministry said in a statement on Sunday, 11 October, that the meeting was chaired by Noor Mohammad Islam Jar, the Taliban governor in Herat, and was also attended by the governors of Badghis, Ghor, Farah and Nimroz.

According to the ministry, police commanders, brigade commanders, intelligence officials and officials from the Taliban’s military courts also took part in the Herat meeting. The statement said the main topics of discussion included the security situation, the rise in criminal offences, efforts to curb drug smuggling and ways to create job opportunities for the public.

The meeting was held after anti-Taliban groups announced in recent weeks that they had carried out attacks against the administration’s forces in Herat and Ghor. According to reports, the latest attack took place on 29 September against the Taliban governor’s office in Ghor, and the Afghanistan United Front claimed responsibility.

Meanwhile, military analyst Mohammad Radmanesh told Afghanistan International that the expansion of armed opposition activity from the north to the east and west of the country has put the Taliban administration under “serious concern” and has challenged its narrative that the resistance fronts are local and ethnic in nature. He added that these fronts, which he said are made up of a number of former soldiers and young people in the country, are becoming a more serious threat to the Taliban administration.

The report also said the Taliban administration has deployed forces to vulnerable areas to prevent the expansion of opposition activity and is trying to strengthen its military capability.

Two days earlier, senior Taliban officials in northern Afghanistan, led by the governor of Balkh, had also held a meeting and discussed security challenges.
