Pakistan’s army says 12 people have been killed and one Pakistani soldier has also died in clashes between its forces and members of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and several ‘Taliban administration’ fighters along the border.

According to the Pakistani military, the incident began on Saturday (18 Mizan) when a TTP group was identified in the Kurram area while trying to infiltrate from Afghan territory and came under fire from Pakistani forces. The army said it had thwarted the infiltration attempt.

In a statement, the Pakistani army said ‘Taliban administration’ posts opened fire in support of the TTP infiltration, claiming that as a result of the exchange of fire, 12 TTP members and ‘Taliban administration’ fighters were killed.

At the same time, reports also emerged of clashes on Friday evening between ‘Taliban administration’ forces and Pakistani border guards in the Dand Patan district of Paktia province. The Taliban administration’s 203 Mansouri Corps confirmed the clash and said Pakistani forces had initially opened fire before its forces responded.

Abdul Haq Fida, spokesman for the 203 Mansouri Corps, announced the end of the clash on Friday evening and said their forces had suffered no casualties.

The incident comes as Pakistani officials have repeatedly accused the ‘Taliban administration’ of sheltering Pakistani groups, including the TTP, and said they use Afghan territory against Pakistan. In its statement, the Pakistani army said the clash showed the Taliban administration’s ‘deliberate and obvious failure’ to prevent terrorist groups from using Afghanistan.

By contrast, the ‘Taliban administration’ has consistently denied the presence of terrorist groups in Afghanistan and said the country’s territory is not used against any other state. The dispute has led to rising tensions in recent months and, at times, border clashes between the two sides.

Afghanistan and Pakistan share a long and tense border, and similar incidents have been reported repeatedly along it in recent years, often accompanied by conflicting claims from both sides over who started the fighting and the casualties.
