Matthew Bell, a former Australian army soldier who served at the Tarinkot military base in Uruzgan province, says that since the return of Taliban rule, people in Afghanistan have faced widespread restrictions and repression, and that the state of civil liberties has changed from the past.<\/p>\n
In an interview with Australian Associated Press, he said that during the years of foreign troop presence, there were greater opportunities for everyday life in some areas and, in his words, girls attended school. The former soldier claimed Australian forces helped provide security and stability in a number of areas during that period and supported the expansion of girls\u2019 education and health services in villages.<\/p>\n
According to the 38-year-old veteran, his mission involved patrolling various areas and local communities in military vehicles or on foot, an effort he said was aimed at preventing Taliban advances. Bell added that the area where he was deployed was dangerous and that Australian forces repeatedly faced threats, including gunfire.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Australian veterans who served in Afghanistan will gather on Sunday, 11 October, to mark the 25th anniversary of the start of their country\u2019s military mission in Afghanistan. Despite controversy and differing views over Australia\u2019s military presence in Afghanistan, some of the forces who served on the battlefield continue to defend their role and what they describe as the \u201cachievements\u201d of their mission.<\/p>\n
Operation Slipper, Australia\u2019s first military mission in Afghanistan, began on 11 October 2001 and continued until 2014. According to the information provided in the report, more than 35,000 Australian men and women in uniform were deployed to the Middle East over two decades during this operation and Australia\u2019s subsequent missions in Afghanistan and the region.<\/p>\n
During this period, 47 members of the Australian Defence Force were killed in military service and 263 others were injured.
