Government sources in Islamabad say Pakistan’s federal government has completed the administrative and security preparations needed to impose governor’s rule or declare a state of emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. According to the sources, whether these scenarios are carried out depends on the outcome of intensive talks between the central government and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party in the next day or two.<\/p>\n
According to IRAF, the federal government in recent days has drawn up a series of administrative and security changes aimed at establishing direct control over Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Based on the information released, a list of new appointments for police commanders, deputy commissioners and security officials in different areas has already been prepared.<\/p>\n
A preliminary plan to declare a state of emergency in 12 key districts of the province has also been prepared and is under review. These measures come as security reports point to a sharp rise in terrorist attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, increasing pressure on the federal government to intervene directly.<\/p>\n
Amid the worsening crisis, members of the federal cabinet have been ordered to travel immediately to Islamabad. An emergency meeting is due to be held with the participation of Asif Ali Zardari, Shehbaz Sharif and senior army commanders to review the latest security reports and decide on the options ahead.<\/p>\n
The meeting has been scheduled as the military has repeatedly warned in recent weeks about political and security unrest on routes leading to the capital. At the same time, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf also held a meeting in Peshawar attended by the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to decide on the messages received from the federal government, scenarios related to the imposition of governor’s rule and the fate of the “grand march”.<\/p>\n
PTI has warned that it considers any move by the central government against the provincial administration a violation of the 18th Amendment to the constitution and an attack on Pakistan’s federal structure.
