Amid Washington’s continued pressure on international judicial institutions, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has welcomed U.S. sanctions against the International Criminal Court and thanked the country’s president and foreign minister.

In remarks, Netanyahu claimed the International Criminal Court was “a political structure” and described it as an “existential threat to democracy.” He said he thanks the U.S. president and foreign minister for the “decisive decision” to impose sanctions on the court.

According to Anadolu, Netanyahu’s comments come as recent months have seen an increase in actions and proceedings in international forums over allegations linked to Israeli crimes, and there has also been mention of the issuance of an international arrest warrant against Netanyahu.

Meanwhile, Mike Huckabee, the U.S. ambassador to the occupied territories, described Washington’s move as “courageous and ethical.”

On the other hand, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called the U.S. sanctions on the International Criminal Court “a major blow to global justice.” The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights also described the move as “unacceptable.”

Canada, Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Britain have also said they support the International Criminal Court against the U.S. move.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said yesterday that the Donald Trump administration had imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court. He claimed Trump would not allow the court to prosecute American citizens.

The International Criminal Court is a permanent judicial body for dealing with serious international crimes, and questions of jurisdiction and prosecutions in cases involving states have been one of the main sources of tension between some governments and the court in recent years.
