OCHA stressed that the education system needs teachers, standard classrooms and learning resources.

The agency added: “For girls, this crisis has a more severe dimension, as the ban on education beyond primary level remains in place.” OCHA also said: “The urgent provision of funding and the lifting of the ban on girls’ education is something that cannot be delayed.”

Olga Cherevko, a member of the OCHA office, said during a visit to a school in Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand province, that Afghan girls face an even more severe crisis in education. In part of her remarks, she said: “But in Afghanistan, due to a lack of resources, a shortage of schools and, most importantly, a shortage of teachers, education has been severely restricted. In addition, the doors of schools to girls beyond primary level remain closed.”

According to her, the consequences of this situation are not limited to classrooms, and fewer opportunities for learning mean fewer opportunities to bring new workers into the labour market. She added that sectors such as health and education, where the presence of women is considered essential, are being hit harder by Taliban restrictions and the shortage of resources.

The report further says that over the past five years, following the ban on the education of women and girls beyond grade six, around 2.6 million girls have been denied access to education, according to the United Nations. The UN also said the Taliban administration has dismissed 7,000 female teachers, and the number of female teachers has fallen from 73,000 in 2022 to 66,000 in 2024.

According to UN forecasts, if current restrictions continue, the situation could worsen and Afghanistan could lose around 20,000 more female teachers by 2030, a figure that could reduce the number of female teachers to 46,000.

OCHA says funding shortages and Taliban restrictions have pushed Afghanistan’s education system into crisis, with girls hit hardest.

[17,4,3

post-23524","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-important-news","category-politics","category-top-news
["GET
