Following an explosion this morning (Wednesday, 15 Mizan) in Fayzabad, the capital of Badakhshan province, the Taliban administration’s police command in the province says it has detained four suspicious individuals; the incident also left two civilians injured.

Ehsanullah Kamgar, spokesman for the Taliban administration’s police command in Badakhshan, confirmed the blast and said a Corolla car was targeted in the Hangar area of New Fayzabad city. According to him, two local residents were lightly wounded in the incident and the passengers in the vehicle were civilians.

Separately, the Afghanistan Freedom Front claimed responsibility for the explosion in a statement, saying that around 8:30 a.m. a Taliban Hilux vehicle was attacked in New Fayzabad and that four Taliban members, including a commander, were killed.

The group also claimed that after the attack, Taliban forces detained and mistreated civilians and acted violently toward the public while creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.

Badakhshan in northeastern Afghanistan has seen a rise in attacks by armed groups opposed to the Taliban administration in recent months. Fayzabad city also witnessed another explosion earlier this week, in which a Taliban intelligence member was killed. Both ISIS and the Afghanistan National Resistance Front claimed responsibility for that incident.
