The fifth national and international Imam Abu Hanifa exhibition opened on Wednesday, Oct. 7, in Kabul with senior Taliban officials in attendance, in an event the administration says is part of its effort to showcase economic potential and expand trade.

Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Taliban administration’s deputy prime minister for economic affairs, said at the ceremony that holding specialised exhibitions can support domestic production, strengthen emerging industries and expand Afghanistan’s trade relations with countries in the region.

He stressed that economic growth is not possible without the active participation of the private sector and said the Taliban administration is seeking to provide “more facilities” for trade and investment.

Referring to the presence of foreign traders at the exhibition, Baradar said regional companies’ participation creates new opportunities for cooperation with neighbouring countries and added that exhibitions help market Afghan products in regional markets.

In another part of his remarks, the Taliban administration’s deputy prime minister for economic affairs referred to the Wakhan road project and claimed that the route is economically and commercially important for Afghanistan and countries in the region. He added that the administration wants to turn Afghanistan’s borders into paths of “strategic connection” between regional countries.

He also claimed the Taliban administration has taken steps to rebuild economic infrastructure and complete unfinished projects, which Baradar described as the “pride of future generations.”

The Imam Abu Hanifa exhibition is one of the events the Taliban administration launches to introduce the country’s products and economic capacity; in the absence of clear indicators and independent reporting on their economic impact, such programmes largely rely on the statements of officials from the administration.
