Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi made an emergency trip to Peshawar and met with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi to discuss security and legal options amid continuing protests. In the meeting, the two sides stressed countering terrorist threats within the framework of the constitution.<\/p>\n
The governor’s office said it was prepared to implement any order issued by the president and prime minister to declare a state of emergency or impose governor’s rule. According to the report, in such a case executive powers in the province would be transferred to the governor, as the representative of the federal government, and the provincial administration affiliated with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party would be suspended.<\/p>\n
The consultations came after several hours of talks between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government delegation and PTI leaders on calling off the march ended without agreement. A request for an urgent meeting with Imran Khan and security guarantees from the provincial government were among the main points of disagreement between the two sides.<\/p>\n
At the same time, as convoys of protesters moved towards Islamabad, the federal government blocked entrances to the capital with shipping containers and placed police and anti-riot forces on alert.
