Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei says Tehran has raised with officials in Kabul reports of the closure or restriction of activities at a number of cultural, educational, media and medical centres in Afghanistan, and continues to follow up on the issue. The reports have raised concerns about the situation of institutions linked to Afghanistan’s Shiite community.<\/p>\n
Speaking at his weekly news conference, Baghaei said the issue is important to Iran and that Tehran is pursuing it through official talks. He expressed hope that the centres, which he said had provided educational, cultural and medical services to the people of Afghanistan for years, would be able to continue their work without obstruction.<\/p>\n
According to published reports, the activities of Khatam al-Nabiyyin University and seminary, Tamadon television network, Rah-e-Farda radio and television, Tabyan Cultural Centre, Ava news agency and Fatemeh al-Zahra Clinic have been stopped or restricted. These institutions have been active in education, culture, media and healthcare services.<\/p>\n
Reports of restrictions and closures of some civil, cultural and media institutions in Afghanistan have emerged since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021.
