Mufti Abdul Rahim, the head of Jamia Al-Rasheed and a figure close to the former Taliban leadership, has described Pakistan’s airstrikes on Afghanistan as Islamabad’s “legitimate right.” In a recent podcast, he also warned that continued tensions could have serious consequences for the Taliban administration.

Abdul Rahim said the Pakistani army is the “defender of the Two Holy Mosques” and the only nuclear force in the Muslim world; for that reason, he said, any war with Pakistan amounts to “enmity against Islam.” He claimed that a significant number of members of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) are present in the Taliban administration’s ranks and enjoy broad support.

The Pakistani cleric also said some Taliban scholars describe the Pakistani army as “taghut” and “apostate.” He claimed that India gives money to the Taliban administration and Israel provides military technology, and that some attacks in Pakistan are organized from Indian soil, describing these allegations as part of regional “intelligence and security games.”

Referring to growing discontent in Afghanistan’s northern provinces, Abdul Rahim warned that the country is heading toward civil war and that it will be difficult for the Taliban administration to control these areas. He said that continuing current policies and confronting Pakistan, in his view to please India, the United States and Israel, would have serious consequences.

Islamabad has repeatedly accused the Taliban administration of harboring anti-Pakistan groups, including the TTP, an allegation the Taliban administration rejects, saying Pakistan’s insecurity is an internal matter. According to Erav, analysts say such positions from figures close to religious circles in Pakistan could be a sign of widening divisions between the Taliban administration and those groups.
