A Russian drone attack on Kiev’s Northern Bridge damaged the road surface and trolleybus power lines and wounded two people. Traffic was severely disrupted in parts of the capital, and movement across the bridge from the left bank to the right bank was blocked.

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko described the city’s situation as “very difficult” and said rescue teams had been sent to the scene. The bridge, described as the capital’s second-largest, connects the eastern and western parts of the city.

The attack came after Kiev’s Southern Bridge was targeted by drones several times during the week. Kiev’s Defence Council held an emergency meeting on Friday after the attacks on the Southern Bridge. The city’s two key bridges span the Dnipro River, and the recent strikes have disrupted road, rail and trolleybus links on both sides of the river.

Russia says its drones are targeting bridges that Moscow says are used to transport Ukrainian troops and military equipment. Russian officials have also again called on foreign citizens, including diplomats, to leave Kiev.

Experts say drones are unlikely to have the capability to bring down bridges, but repeated attacks can force their closure and weaken their structures. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told the Financial Times that he believes Vladimir Putin has decided that there should be “no rules” during the attack on Ukraine, and that Russia is targeting infrastructure, bridges, data centres, hospitals and educational facilities.

Putin claimed at the Valdai foreign policy forum on Thursday that Russia’s strikes on Ukrainian economic targets were a response to Kiev’s attacks on Russian oil refineries and its ships in the Black Sea.
