Local sources say an armed clash broke out at the Hashnam gold mine in Yamgan district between men linked to Qari Wazir, the official responsible for collecting mine revenues, and forces loyal to Jawadullah Samim, one of the commanders close to Fasihuddin Fitrat, the chief of staff of the Taliban administration’s army. According to these sources, the wounded person was among Samim’s men.<\/p>\n
The clash occurred early on Friday, October 10, and a video attributed to the incident recorded the sound of repeated gunfire in the mine compound. After the incident, Taliban administration forces sent a response unit from Fayzabad, the capital of Badakhshan province, to the site; sources report that the security situation in the area has worsened.<\/p>\n
Disputes over control of mines and the distribution of their revenues have a long history in Badakhshan and in recent months have led to armed tensions between Taliban commanders, as well as between the group’s forces and local residents. In May, the suspension of gold extraction in several areas met with protests from miners and local people. At the same time, clashes over the Qotqoti gold mine in Shaki district and the arrest of several people close to local commanders added to the tensions.<\/p>\n
After that, the Taliban administration dispatched a special unit of about 1,000 personnel to Badakhshan to control the mines and curb the influence of local commanders, including Jumma Khan Fath. However, fighting between Taliban forces and Fath’s men in Nasi district and surrounding areas in August lasted for about a week and ended with his surrender and arrest.
