The Awami National Party of Pakistan has opposed any imposition of martial law or a state of emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, saying the province\u2019s security crisis should not be used to suspend elected institutions or curtail their legal powers.<\/p>\n
In a statement, the party said terrorism and inequality in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan have persisted for nearly half a century. According to the party, a number of \u201ccentres of power\u201d have earned billions from the continuation of these crises.<\/p>\n
The Awami National Party said that if the government intends to suspend elected provincial institutions, it must first deal with those it says are responsible for creating and perpetuating the current situation. The party stressed that it does not support any undemocratic move.<\/p>\n
The statement came after Pakistan\u2019s federal information minister, Attaullah Tarar, accused the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial government led by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and Chief Minister Sohail Afridi of facilitating terrorist groups and lacking belief in counterterrorism operations. The remarks drew a response from local and provincial parties.<\/p>\n
At the same time, speculation over a possible suspension of the provincial government by Islamabad because of the security situation has faced opposition from Pashtun parties.
