A delegation from the US Afghanistan War Commission has met Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir in Rawalpindi to discuss Pakistan’s role in the war in Afghanistan, the regional security situation and developments in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n
According to a statement from the Pakistan Army, the delegation, led by Shamila N. Chaudhry and Colin F. Jackson, met Pakistani officials as part of a review of 20 years of US military, political and diplomatic involvement in Afghanistan. The two sides also discussed matters related to the commission’s work.<\/p>\n
The Pakistan Army said Munir shared Islamabad’s views on security developments and the challenges the country faced during the Afghanistan war. He also stressed the importance of taking a regional perspective and Pakistan’s experience into account when assessing the strategic, diplomatic and operational dimensions of the Afghanistan war.<\/p>\n
The Afghanistan War Commission was established by the US Congress in 2021 to examine US decisions and actions in the war in Afghanistan from June 2001 to August 2021. The meeting took place as the commission continues to gather views from parties involved in the war and examine the role of regional countries in the long conflict.<\/p>\n
US forces withdrew from Afghanistan in August 2021 after two decades of military presence. Rawalpindi, where the Pakistan Army headquarters is located, is considered one of the country’s main centres of military decision-making.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
