At a meeting on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, participants in a special discussion on Afghanistan stressed the need to launch an inclusive political process centred on the people of Afghanistan and called for increased international pressure on the Taliban administration.<\/p>\n
Speakers at the meeting cited the situation of women and girls, the deterioration of human rights, the presence of terrorist groups and security concerns in Afghanistan as the main challenges. They stressed that without public participation in determining the country’s future, it would not be possible to achieve a legitimate and accountable structure.<\/p>\n
The meeting also called on the international community to hold the Taliban administration accountable for its actions. Several participants and country representatives also emphasised recognition of \u201cgender apartheid\u201d and said the international community’s piecemeal approach to the Taliban administration had not been effective.<\/p>\n
The UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan also said the Taliban administration had been able, over the past five years, to cross the international community’s red lines without facing practical consequences. These remarks have added to concerns over the lack of effective international action against restrictions and human rights violations in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n
The meeting, titled \u201cThe Way Forward for Afghanistan: Towards an Afghan-Led Political Process for Inclusive Governance and Regional Security,\u201d was organised by Afghanistan’s Permanent Mission to the UN, the Andiana Foundation and Independent Diplomat.<\/p>\n
Naseer Ahmad Faiq, the acting head of Afghanistan’s Permanent Mission to the UN, said at the meeting that after five years of Taliban rule, it was time to begin a political process centred on the people of Afghanistan to determine the country’s future. According to him, the people must play a fundamental role in decisions about the country’s political future, and the aim of this process is to create a legal, inclusive, representative and accountable system.<\/p>\n
Following the collapse of the previous government, Afghanistan’s Permanent Mission to the UN has remained one of the few bodies still reflecting critical positions toward the Taliban administration in international forums. The UN General Assembly is also considered each year one of the most important platforms for raising Afghanistan’s political and human rights crisis.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
