Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar has called for structural reform of the multilateral system at the high-level general debate of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, saying international institutions have failed in carrying out their core mission.<\/p>\n
He warned that this failure has weakened peacekeeping and collective action and has also placed global development under direct pressure. According to him, as tensions and wars rise around the world, the need to rethink the structure of multilateralism has become more urgent.<\/p>\n
Jaishankar said the order established after 1945 is now confronting new global realities, and much of the current instability stems from the difficulties of this transition. He added that the world is moving toward a multipolar order and that, in his view, this trend cannot be stopped.<\/p>\n
Referring to the performance of the United Nations, India\u2019s foreign minister said the body, created to maintain international peace and security, is now grappling with an efficiency crisis. He added that wars are not confined to conflict zones alone and that their consequences also affect countries that are not present on the battlefield.<\/p>\n
In many cases, he said, countries with the least role in decision-making suffer the greatest damage from conflicts. Jaishankar urged the UN General Assembly to confront present realities directly.<\/p>\n
He also stressed that changes in the global order, the continuation of conflicts, and the unequal distribution of the consequences of war have made the need for a more effective, representative and accountable multilateral system more pressing. According to him, transparent decision-making, civil dialogue and broad participation are essential elements of securing peace in a multipolar order.<\/p>\n
The UN General Assembly is one of the United Nations\u2019 most important annual meetings, where officials from member states present their views on major global issues.
