He said demining work is continuing in different parts of Afghanistan, while more than 100 preventive projects are also under way in various provinces to reduce losses caused by natural and non-natural disasters.

According to Turabi, the office’s programmes are organised around five areas: prevention, preparedness, hotspot removal, relief, and reconstruction. He did not provide further details on the exact locations of the projects, when they are expected to be completed, or the extent of contaminated areas covered.

Afghanistan is among the world’s most heavily mined countries, with vast amounts of unexploded ordnance left behind by years of war. The contamination kills civilians every year, especially children, and hinders the use of farmland and the implementation of development projects.

Alongside the threat posed by mines, Afghanistan is also vulnerable to seasonal floods, earthquakes and drought. In recent years, reduced international aid for demining and disaster management has made efforts to address these challenges even more difficult.

Taliban say seven districts in north Kabul have been cleared of mines, while more than 100 disaster-prevention projects are underway.

[17,5

post-22716","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-important-news","category-security-incidents
["GET
