Kazakhstan’s Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tileuberdi has said the international community should take a practical, coordinated and step-by-step approach to Afghanistan, arguing that humanitarian aid alone is not enough to curb poverty, displacement and dependence in the country.<\/p>\n
Speaking on Friday at the general debate of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, he said Afghanistan’s long-term stability is closely linked to security and sustainable development in Central Asia. Any approach to Afghanistan, he added, must take this regional connection into account.<\/p>\n
Tileuberdi stressed that humanitarian assistance remains essential for Afghanistan, but said it alone cannot break the cycle of the country’s ongoing crises. He called on the United Nations to play a central role in the international community’s engagement with Afghanistan.<\/p>\n
The Kazakh foreign minister also said his country is working with the United Nations to activate the organisation’s regional centre for the Sustainable Development Goals of Central Asia and Afghanistan in Almaty. He added that the centre’s performance should be assessed on the basis of practical results and the level of support it provides to the region.<\/p>\n
Kazakhstan is among the Central Asian countries that have repeatedly stressed in recent years the link between stability in Afghanistan and regional security.
