As part of its efforts to attract foreign capital and tourists, the Taliban administration has asked Qatar to cooperate in Afghanistan’s tourism sector, a request made as restrictions imposed by the administration have led to a decline in domestic tourism.<\/p>\n
The Taliban-run Ministry of Information and Culture said in a statement on Thursday, 2 October, that Powerullah Jamal, the ministry’s deputy for tourism affairs, discussed tourism cooperation with Ali bin Marzouk, Qatar’s ambassador in Kabul.<\/p>\n
According to the Taliban administration, the talks focused on attracting Qatari tourists, introducing Afghanistan’s natural and historical attractions, creating investment opportunities for Qatari investors, and establishing a formal framework for tourism cooperation between the two countries.<\/p>\n
Powerullah Jamal, according to the Taliban-run Ministry of Information and Culture, said Afghanistan’s natural beauty, historical buildings and ancient sites provide scope for cooperation with Qatari tourists and investors. The Qatari ambassador in Kabul also stressed the importance of cultural ties between the two countries and said that for expanding relations and joint cooperation, “continuous engagement” is necessary.<\/p>\n
The request comes as the Taliban administration has in recent years sought to attract foreign tourists by promoting a narrative of “nationwide security” and “safety for foreigners”; however, due to weak infrastructure and social restrictions, Afghanistan’s tourism industry has yet to see significant change.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, restrictions on the presence of women and families in recreational and tourist places have had a negative impact on domestic tourism and caused the sector to decline. Even so, the Taliban administration has welcomed some foreign female tourists, especially content creators who portray Afghanistan as “safe”.<\/p>\n
The Taliban administration is speaking of expanding tourism even though the group destroyed the Buddha statues in Bamiyan, some of Afghanistan’s best-known ancient \u0622\u062b\u0627\u0631, in 2001.
