With Kabul facing a severe water shortage, the Taliban-run Ministry of Urban Development and Housing said a plan to transfer water from Sayyad in Kapisa province to supply New Kabul is in the design and assessment stage. In a statement issued today, Wednesday, 1 Mizan, the ministry said the source is being examined as one of the proposed options for supplying water to the urban project.<\/p>\n
According to the ministry, based on studies carried out, the Sayyad groundwater reservoir is considered one of four proposed sources for providing water to New Kabul. The Taliban administration said the source is located in the southern part of the Ghorband River and near the confluence of the Panjshir and Ghorband rivers, about 55 kilometres from the New Kabul area.<\/p>\n
Citing studies by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in 2012, the Taliban-run Ministry of Urban Development and Housing said daily water demand per person in New Kabul has been calculated at 150 litres. Based on the same studies, the total water demand for New Kabul, Kabul\u2019s 17th district and Sheikh town is estimated at 7.34 cubic metres per second, with an annual volume of 233.4 million cubic metres.<\/p>\n
The ministry claimed that the capacity to extract water from the natural aquifers in Sayyad is estimated at about four cubic metres per second, with an annual capacity of 126.144 million cubic metres. Taliban officials also said that if an \u201cinfiltration gallery\u201d system is used for water extraction, this capacity could rise to 6.3 cubic metres per second and 198.67 million cubic metres per year, a figure the ministry said would cover about 85 percent of the projected annual needs of New Kabul.<\/p>\n
New Kabul is one of the major urban development projects in Dasht-e Barchi, north of Kabul. The plan was approved about 20 years ago under the previous government, but has still not been implemented. The project was designed in four phases, and the first phase was also divided into five sections. The Taliban administration said two years ago that work on it had begun.<\/p>\n
This comes as the current city of Kabul is facing rising population pressure and a severe shortage of basic services, especially water, with much of its supply coming from underground sources. Experts have previously warned that Kabul\u2019s groundwater reserves could run dry within five years.
