Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, speaking at a meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s contact group on Afghanistan, called for the lifting of all Taliban restrictions on women and girls and for the formation of an inclusive government with representation from all ethnic groups. He said the restrictions were contrary to Islamic principles and the norms of Muslim societies.<\/p>\n
In a statement posted on X early Wednesday, 1 Mizan, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said Islamabad had expressed concern over the presence and activity of more than 20 terrorist groups in Afghanistan under Taliban rule. The statement said this situation, along with the Taliban administration’s domestic policies, had hindered improvements in the lives of the Afghan people.<\/p>\n
According to the statement, the Pakistani foreign minister described the Taliban administration as having “wrong priorities and flawed ideologies.” He urged the OIC contact group to press the Taliban administration to stop supporting terrorist groups, respect international commitments, and prevent the trafficking of drugs and weapons.<\/p>\n
Dar said: “Lift all restrictions imposed on women and girls that are contrary to Islamic principles and the norms of Muslim society, and reconsider policies that deprive ordinary people in Afghanistan of fundamental freedoms.”<\/p>\n
The remarks come as Pakistan has long been regarded as one of the main backers of the Taliban during its two decades of war against NATO forces and the republican government in Afghanistan. However, the Taliban administration has repeatedly rejected Pakistan’s claims that attacks have been planned and carried out from Afghan soil.<\/p>\n
