Nasir Ahmad Faik, Afghanistan\u2019s representative to the United Nations, said the Taliban administration is only one political side in Afghanistan and cannot alone represent the country\u2019s social diversity and the demands of its people.<\/p>\n
Speaking on Monday at a side event on \u201cWomen, Peace, Justice and National Reconciliation in Afghanistan\u201d on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, he said that five years after the Taliban returned to power, Afghanistan still faces deep political, humanitarian, economic, social and human rights crises.<\/p>\n
Faik stressed that despite continued diplomatic efforts within various international frameworks, a \u201csustainable, just and inclusive\u201d political solution for Afghanistan has yet to be reached. He said any future political process must include the direct and meaningful presence of women.<\/p>\n
According to him, Afghan women should not be seen only as victims in need of support, but as political actors and community leaders. Faik added that women\u2019s participation should not be limited to symbolic presence or consultations outside the main political process.<\/p>\n
The Afghan envoy to the UN said that if Afghanistan is to move beyond the current situation, women must sit at the same tables where the main decisions are made. He warned that excluding half the population strips any political compromise of legitimacy and trust.<\/p>\n
Faik also stressed the need for a comprehensive and lasting political solution, saying justice, accountability, recognition of victims, dialogue and national reconciliation must be pursued at the same time. Without justice and accountability, he said, lasting peace cannot be achieved.<\/p>\n
He also asked how Afghan women can be brought into political processes as \u201cpolitical actors, not observers,\u201d and how the views of victims, civil society and different political, ethnic and religious groups can be reflected in Afghanistan\u2019s political future.<\/p>\n
Faik called on UN member states and regional partners to help create the conditions for an \u201cinclusive, Afghanistan-centred and Afghan-led\u201d political process. He said Afghanistan\u2019s future must ultimately be determined by the Afghan people.<\/p>\n
He went on to say that no political agreement built on exclusion, coercion and fear will endure. According to him, international processes related to Afghanistan will also lack the necessary credibility without the participation of Afghans, especially women.<\/p>\n
In recent years, Nasir Ahmad Faik has raised positions related to Afghanistan\u2019s political and human rights crisis in international meetings as Afghanistan\u2019s representative to the United Nations.
