Pakistan\u2019s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has confirmed airstrikes by the country in areas inside Afghanistan, saying 28 people were killed and three targets, including a training centre for suicide bombers, were destroyed.<\/p>\n
In a statement on Monday, 30 September, the ministry said that bases and hideouts of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and affiliated groups were targeted \u201cprecisely and appropriately\u201d. According to the ministry, a large quantity of weapons and ammunition was also destroyed along with the targeted individuals.<\/p>\n
Pakistan said the strikes came after several \u201cterrorist attacks\u201d on its territory and against residents of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The explanation comes amid repeated escalations in security tensions between Islamabad and the Taliban administration over the activities of armed groups opposed to Pakistan.<\/p>\n
The Taliban administration had earlier said that Pakistani fighter jets bombed \u201ccivilian targets\u201d in the provinces of Kunar and Paktika early on Monday. Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban administration\u2019s spokesman, said three people, including a woman, were killed and two others injured in Kunar, while the strike in Paktika caused no casualties.<\/p>\n
Mujahid also said Taliban administration forces would respond to this \u201cviolation\u201d. Pakistan, however, stressed in its statement that the targets of the attack were centres linked to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan.<\/p>\n
The strike came two days after a deadly attack on a police compound in Kohat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which left 31 people dead, including 16 police officers, and more than 100 wounded. The group Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen, led by Hafiz Gul Bahadur, claimed responsibility for that attack.
