The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has confirmed that at least three civilians, including a man, a woman and a girl, were killed and four others wounded in the wake of what it described as \u201cpossible airstrikes\u201d early on Monday in Kunar province.<\/p>\n
In a statement posted on X, UNAMA said the latest incident once again underscored concerns over civilian casualties in cross-border violence. The mission stressed that respecting international humanitarian law to prevent harm to civilians is an urgent necessity.<\/p>\n
According to UNAMA, more than 1,100 people in Afghanistan have been killed or wounded so far this year as a result of cross-border armed violence. The figures show that insecurity along the border continues to exact a heavy toll on local residents.<\/p>\n
The Taliban administration has claimed that Pakistan targeted \u201ccivilian areas\u201d in the provinces of Kunar and Paktika early Monday. Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban administration\u2019s spokesman, said that in Kunar one woman and two men were killed and two women and two men were wounded, and that all of them were civilians.<\/p>\n
He also said that in Paktika a house and a shop were bombed, but no casualties were reported. In contrast, Pakistan\u2019s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting claimed that hideouts and bases of the Pakistan Taliban, known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and affiliated groups were targeted in the strikes, and that at least 28 \u201cterrorists,\u201d including a number of suicide bombers, were killed.<\/p>\n
The airstrike came two days after a deadly attack on a police compound in Kohat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which left 31 people dead, including 16 police officers, and more than 100 wounded. The group Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen, led by Hafiz Gul Bahadur, claimed responsibility for that attack. Pakistani officials have repeatedly alleged that the group operates from Afghan territory.<\/p>\n
Kunar province lies in eastern Afghanistan along the border with Pakistan and has repeatedly seen clashes and cross-border attacks in recent years.
