The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has said that using greenhouses equipped with drip irrigation systems in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province can reduce water use in agriculture by up to 60 percent, a move the agency says will help make better use of limited resources amid water shortages.<\/p>\n
On Monday, 30 Sunbula, FAO wrote on X that these greenhouses were built for farmers in Kandahar with funding from the European Union and in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). According to the agency, the mechanism also makes it possible to grow crops out of season and provide nutritious vegetables for families and the market.<\/p>\n
Ashraf Al-Hawamdeh, FAO’s technical adviser in Afghanistan, said: “Water is one of the main constraints for farmers in this region. Climate-smart technologies, such as vegetable production in greenhouses, drip irrigation and proper farming practices, can help farmers make better use of limited water and land resources.”<\/p>\n
FAO added that one of these greenhouses covers about 400 square metres and has been jointly allocated to six farmers. The agency also said that seeds, fertiliser, tools and technical training have been provided to the farmers.<\/p>\n
According to FAO, the farmers in the programme receive training in nursery management, irrigation, fertilisation, plant pruning and pest and disease control. The initiative is part of the “Afghanistan Community Resilience” project, which is being implemented in the provinces of Kandahar, Helmand and Badghis with support from the European Union and in cooperation with FAO, the United Nations Development Programme, the International Organization for Migration and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
