The Taliban administration in Helmand has said that more than 28 tonnes of smuggled goods were seized in various parts of the province over the past week, and 22 people were arrested in connection with the incident. The administration said 20 vehicles were also impounded during the operation.<\/p>\n
The Taliban governor\u2019s office in Helmand said on Sunday that its officers had discovered 28,180 kilograms of imported and exported goods being transported illegally. The Taliban administration also claimed it had prevented 400 kilograms of copper from being taken out of the country.<\/p>\n
According to the published statement, the confiscated items included medicine, dates, brooms, car spare parts, cloth, cosmetics, oil, shampoo, thinner, sulphur and containers. The shipments were found in Lashkar Gah city, the Rabat Rig area of Bahramcha district, Saffar Rig in Garmsir district and a number of border routes along the Afghanistan-Pakistan frontier.<\/p>\n
Taliban officials did not provide details on the origin or destination of the goods. However, local sources say that with much of the trade between Afghanistan and Pakistan restricted over the past year, the transport of goods through unofficial and smuggling routes has increased in some border areas.<\/p>\n
Helmand is one of Afghanistan\u2019s southern provinces, and the Bahramcha route in the province is considered one of the main routes for the movement of goods between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
