A collision between a car carrying undocumented Afghan migrants and a diesel tanker on the Iranshahr-Jakigur road in Iran\u2019s Sistan and Baluchestan province has left seven people dead and nine others injured. Rescue teams have transferred the injured to medical centres.<\/p>\n
The incident took place on Friday morning. So far, full details about the identities of the dead and injured have not been released, and the identification process is continuing.<\/p>\n
According to official reports from Iran\u2019s traffic police, preliminary investigations indicate that the migrant vehicle\u2019s veering into the left lane was the main cause of the crash. Police officials also once again warned about the dangers of vehicles known as \u201cshooti\u201d.<\/p>\n
Police say these vehicles are usually used to illegally transport goods and people and, because of their high speed, inappropriate capacity and traffic violations, pose a serious risk to passengers and other road users. Traffic police stressed that if these vehicles are identified, they will be impounded in accordance with the law and their drivers referred to judicial authorities.<\/p>\n
The incident comes as deaths among Afghan migrants on dangerous routes leading to Iran have increased. According to recent reports, in one case alone at least 17 Afghan migrants, including women and children, died of severe thirst in the Saravan border area.<\/p>\n
Two months ago, the bodies of 14 Afghan migrants were also found in the Nimroz desert; they had gone missing while on a smuggling route to Iran.
